Do You Have to See or Handle Rodents During the Removal Process?
No — and if you let us know upfront that you’d prefer not to see anything, we make that the standard for your job. Our technician arrives, conducts the inspection, and manages every aspect of the physical removal without requiring your presence in any room where rodent activity is occurring. Everything caught is bagged before leaving the premises.
This is exactly the experience Jillian Collie described in her Dave’s Pest Control review: “I mentioned I was a little scared of rodents and bugs, he ensured me he would keep everything discrete as he bagged everything up and away before I could see it.” This is our standard protocol — not an exception. We bag and remove at every job. If you’re squeamish, just tell us when you call.
Many of our Lakeland clients are more comfortable with the process than they expected once they understand exactly what each day involves. This page walks through what actually happens — so the only surprise is that it’s less stressful than you imagined.
You can be completely uninvolved in the physical process. The inspection, trapping, removal, and cleanup are conducted by our technician. You receive a written report with photographs — but the photographs are optional to view. You can simply read the written summary. Your involvement is limited to: let the tech in, approve the plan, receive the report.
What Happens on Each Day of the Removal Process?
Here’s the day-by-day reality of a typical Lakeland roof rat removal job — so you know exactly what to expect before it starts.
Day 1 — Inspection (you can be anywhere in the house)
The technician inspects the attic via the hatch and walks the roofline exterior. You can be in the living room, the kitchen, anywhere — you don’t need to be in the attic space or anywhere near it. The inspection takes 30–60 minutes. Afterward, the tech sits with you (or calls you if you prefer) to explain findings and pricing. No rats or droppings are brought into your living space during the inspection.
Days 1–3 — Trap placement (you don’t see any of this)
Snap traps are placed inside the attic along confirmed rat runways — identified during the inspection from grease marks and dropping patterns. The traps are inside the attic, not in your living space. They’re mechanical snap traps, not poison. No bait that attracts animals into your kitchen or bedroom.
Days 2–7 — Trap checks (completely handled by technician)
The technician accesses the attic to check and reset traps. Everything caught is double-bagged and removed from the property before leaving. You never see the trap contents. You receive a brief update — “2 caught today, checking again tomorrow” — without visual details unless you want them.
Days 2–7 — Exclusion sealing (exterior work, minimal disruption)
Entry point sealing happens on the exterior of the structure — roofline access via ladder. You don’t need to be home for this phase if you prefer not to be. The technician works the exterior while you’re away. No interior access required for the sealing phase.
Day 7–14 — Attic cleanup (you’re not involved)
HEPA vacuum of attic droppings and enzyme deodorizer application happen entirely within the attic space. You don’t need to be present. All contaminated material is bagged and removed. The attic hatch is closed, cleaned on the exterior, and left cleaner than it was found.
Day 7 — Close-out report (written, with optional photos)
You receive a written close-out report documenting all sealed entry points, trap results, and attic condition before/after. Photos are included in the report — but if you’d prefer text only, just tell us. The report is for your records, insurance, and the 90-day guarantee documentation. No viewing required.
What About the Sounds — How Long Until the House Is Quiet?
The scratching typically stops within 3–7 days of trap deployment for a typical infestation. Here’s why the timeline varies and what to expect.
Traps remove animals as they’re caught. The colony size at the time of sealing determines the timeline — a small infestation (5–10 animals) may go quiet in 3–4 days. A larger established colony (20–30 animals) may take 10–14 days for trap activity to fully cease. The sealing prevents new animals from entering, so the active population is only what was inside at the time of sealing — it cannot grow from that point forward.
The moment you stop hearing scratching is not the end of the job — it’s the confirmation that the interior population has been resolved. The follow-up visit 7 days after the last sound-free night confirms the traps are clear and the sealed entry points are holding.
FAQ — What to Expect If You’re Nervous About Rodent Removal
Do I have to be home during the inspection?
You can provide lockbox access and be away from the property during the inspection if you prefer. The technician can conduct the full inspection independently, photograph all findings, and call or text you with the summary. You review the plan remotely and approve what you want us to do. You don’t need to be physically present at any stage.
What if I accidentally see a trap that was set?
Traps are placed inside the attic space, behind appliances (if kitchen mice are involved), and in locations not accessed during normal daily routines. Unless you open the attic hatch or look behind your refrigerator, you won’t encounter them. If you’re particularly concerned, let us know and we’ll identify specific locations to avoid during the treatment period.
Will the house smell during the removal process?
The purpose of mechanical trapping (versus poison) is to avoid exactly this. Animals caught in snap traps are removed same-day or next-day during trap checks — they don’t remain in the attic long enough to create an odor issue. The enzyme deodorizer applied during attic cleanup neutralizes the pheromone residue that poison treatments can never address because the dead rats stay in the walls.
Is there anything I need to do to prepare for the technician’s visit?
Clear access to the attic hatch if possible — usually that means moving anything stored directly below it. That’s typically all that’s needed. If the infestation involves kitchen mice, note which appliances or cabinets have had activity so the tech can prioritize those areas. Nothing else is required from you before the first visit.
